"So... Let me get this straight. You're... absolutely worthless."
Sunny weather. Enough clouds that, periodically, a peculiar shadow would sweep across the land, only for the star that illuminated the sky to reign supreme once more. The sky was painted a dark blue - similar in color to that of his eyes, if not a tad darker - and a very pretty shade if he did say so himself. These kinds of days were rare, to be entirely honest. Either there were to many clouds, causing the sky to hold more gray than blue. Sometimes there were to little clouds and the sky was back to it's pale color. But, this... This was just right. Right smack dab in the center of the two extremes, causing perfect harmony of nature itself. Well... sort of. Maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration.
A tall young man, no older than twenty-four or twenty-five strolled through the path dubbed Route One. Quite the original name, if you asked him. Clothed in a peculiar get up - a green tunic with a matching hat with his sword sheath colliding gently with his back rythmically with every smooth step he took. Brown boots, almost the color of fine chocolate, dusted the dirt path in almost perfect time and a confident sort of air hovered around his blonde-haired head. In his gloved hand was a Poke Ball, deep red on one half and as white as the purest snow on the other. However, what was inside left much to be desired.
"I always heard rumors that Magikarp weren't all that great, but I guess I never really believed all that nonsense," Garett said more to himself than the orange fish, lifting the ball up to eye level and looking said creature dead in the eye. "Well... Not until now, that is." Stat-wise, the creature was weak but not the weakest out there. However, pairing that with it's horrid moveset added up to a catastrophy just waiting to happen. A sigh escaped the man's lips and he took a double take at the Poke Dex he'd been gifted back at headquarters. It might have been stolen before arriving at said place, but it certainly had its uses.
Well, no matter where he'd gotten it, it still didn't change a thing. The Magikarp was still a Magikarp and it's Poke Dex entry was still the same Poke Dex entry. Perhaps, if he read it aloud, the words would change into something more useful? Ah, yes, that could have worked. In addition, it never hurt to try. "An underpowered, pathetic Pokemon," he said in a strong voice, reading it over for the umptenth time. "It may jump high on rare occations, but never more than... seven feet..." His blue eyes stared at the Pokemon, then back to the Poke Dex entry. Everything was adding up to nothing good and he wasn't liking it. How did he acquire such a worthless pet one might ponder? Well, it was very simple, really.
He was ripped off.
A sales man in the nearby town - which was it again? Gah, he couldn't be bothered to try and remember - had claimed to have a very rare, special Pokemon that could defeat any other Pocket Monster in power. The price was huge. Heck, he'd practically payed all the money he had. However, it seemed like a large deal for such a powerful Pokemon so he quickly payed up and awaited his reward. Perhaps the fact that the sales person had dashed off before he was able to catch a glimpse at what was inside the Pokemon should have given him a clue that what he'd recieved was far from what he had expected and payed for. Maybe his stupidity was kicking in once more in it's striking comeback - the day a supposed smart guy gets ripped off and pays a ton for a stinking Magikarp - or maybe he just had a little more faith in humanity than the average bear. Er, person. Someone he didn't even know wouldn't sell him garbage for a diamond... right?
Wrong.
"You know," he told his new partner, Carpe Diem - fitting, if not a bit ironic, no? - "Once, it was said that Pokemon could gain strength just by partaking in battles and watching other Pokemon fight. From there, they were learn how to fight themselves and would eventually grow in levels without even partaking in true battles. Sounds a little far fetched, but how else are you supposed to get a Gyarados out of a Magikarp?" Yes, that was right. While searching for information that would help him learn how to actually train his Pokemon - along with the idea that Pokemon could gain levels simply by being in battle - he'd learned that the pathetic Pokemon Magikarp evolved into the giant beasts known as Gyarados. Along with Epona and Midna, he would have a fairly lethal team. But, as long as he had the orange fish along with him, he would be mocked, surely, and that was something he intended to avoid.
He'd just have to fix that.
"If yuo want to gain levels, I guess you're going to have to watch and partake in a battle. I guess you'd gain more if you were in a battle of your own, but I don't see any wild Pokemon." Of course, that could easily change in the near future. However, until then, he'd just do things his way. "Alright, Carpe, I'm going to have to show you how realy tough Pokemon fight! You ready?" The Magikarp nodded slowly within it's Poke Ball, causing the man to wonder if it had really been listening to what he was saying at all. Reguardless, he fetched Midna and Epona's Poke Balls - one named after midnight and the other after some religion he couldn't quite remember - and released them into the air. "Midna! Epona! Let's show our little fishy here how it's done!" The moment the two were freed from their balls, they looked at their trainer in interest, having not listened to his chat with their new partner earlier. Letting out an amused sigh, he explained, "I want you to fight one another. You know, attack each other like you would a wild Pokemon. Carpe here is more than a little weak, so I was hoping watching you would get him in the fighting spirit!" Midna let out a snort while Epona let out an excited cry. The former, however, flexed her claws, most likely preparing to battle.
"Ready... Set... Battle!"
Garett held up Carpe's Poke Ball so the male water-type could watch as the two four legged animals fought one another. The two were better trained then a lot of the rookie trainer's Pokemon that he knew, but that didn't mean that we should let up then. Once Carpe evolved, he would train his sights on later routes with more challenging Pokemon where he could level grind and become a powerful member of Team Imum. He'd have to grow stronger if he wanted to be able to defeat people like it's leader Nymah or it's temporary leader Lorelei. It'd be better, though, he said in silence, if there were a wild Pokemon here to train on. Carpe can't gain to many levels just by watching my other Pokemon battle...

"Urp~" The small pokemon hiccuped and let out a light burp as she drifted along. Without a worry in the world she hovered slowly through tall grass. The way the weeds grazed her pink skin tickled a bit and she relished in how content she was. She already eaten three or so good dreams from a napping pokemon and they had been utterly delicious. Even now they still rolled around in her tummy, giving her a warm fuzzy feeling. The feeling expressed itself in a fine pink mist as pure as her skin that seeped from her pores. How she loved mid-day. So many pokemon napping without a care in the world during that time and so many content happy dreams to for omnoms. The sounds of battle didn't even register until they come from right next to her. Still, so full and drowse, she could find it in her to care. Onto the path she drifted, bumping right into the back of a green haired human. However, she merely changed direction and drifted off to the side, continuing where ever it was the wind would decide to take her. Oh, how the sun felt so nice. Perhaps she should find another shady area where sleepy pokemon frequented. She was getting a bit hungry again. And a small part of her wouldn't mind a lazy nap for herself. "You know, this could actually work."
It may have seemed a little far fetched at first. I mean, really? The idea that a Pokemon could grow in level by watching or participating in a battle, even without even doing anything was a little hard to swallow. However, it did make sense, even if only in the slightest. Maybe it would give Pokemon a greater fighting spirit, therefor causing them to grow in level? ... Okay, maybe not. That sounded a little stupid, honestly. He made it a note to himself to never again trust random sales people again.
"... Okay, maybe this won't work."
This was stupid! He must have looked like an utter and complete fool, holding up a Poke Ball to his two scuffling partners, grinning like a mad man, and talking to the Magikarp who couldn't even understand him. Part of him wanted to pick that fish's ball up and chuck it into the ocean. Well, at least it would be with it's kind and, better yet, he'd never have to see the worthless creature he had spent so much money on. Of course, there were a couple of inmportant flaws in this plan of his. One, he couldn't do that to the creature. It would likely die of hunger in that ball that would keep it captive and, even though he was a member of Team Imum, he wasn't that cruel. That, and the fact that he had wasted so much money on it was only more of a reason to keep it in his possession.
"Looks like I'm stuck with you, little guy," Garett grumbled, examining the weak Pokemon... only to see it had fallen asleep. "Aw, look who's taking a nice little - wait a minute, what?" Realization dawned on the trainer that, instead of examining the fighting Pokemon to get an example of what he was to do, the Pokemon was sleeping! "What the - you! Up! Get your fat, lazy, fish butt up before I really do throw you into the ocean!" No awnser. "Oh, not listening to me, huh? Well, I'll show you just how serious I -" Suddenly, his words were cut off by something in the corner of his eye.
"Eh?"
Midna and Epona stopped their battle, refraining from using any of their moves on one another. Well, Midna snuck in another Assurance attack, successfully knocking over the horse-like Pokemon, but that was beside the point. A... Munna, right? Yes. The pink Pokemon was drifting around lazily on the wind, not even taking any notice of the two fighting Pokemon and the trainer yelling at one of his many Poke Balls. Even when the Pokemon bumped into his back, causing him to shudder at it's touch, it simply changed direction. Was it even aware that he was there? From the looks of it, it wasn't. "Urm... Hello?" he called to the psycic-type, hoping to grab its attention.
"Midna, let's get rid of this thing. Quick; use your -" The green-clothed man cut himself off, looking at the Munna, then at Carpe's Poke Ball with a sudden idea. Could gain levels simply by being in battle, huh...? Midna was flexing her claws once more, her typical cocky grin tugging at her mouth. The moment her trainer called out an attack, she'd rip the lazy creature to shreds. However, he held out a gloved hand to her, telling her silently to stop the attack. "Let's let Carpe handle this one," he told her with one of his signature goofy grins. She growled at him, obviously angry about not being able to fight, but layed on the ground to show she would obey his simple order.
Holding the Magikarp's Poke Ball up to his face, he told the Pokemon, "Alright, Carpe. This is gonna be your very first battle, so I want you to - okay, come on! Seriously? Wake up!" He openned his eyes to look at his trainer hazily, though it was made apparent that it had no interest in battling whatsoever. With a sigh, he continued, "The moment I let you out of your Poke Ball... I want you to do everything you can to not die. Okay? Use your... splash attack, or whatever." The Magikarp was released, it's Poke Ball being tossed into the air, and it did just as told - splashed helplessly on the ground. "That's it! Keep it up!" Garett said, all while laughing himself silly at the site of the pathetic creature.

There was some inkling thought that prodded at the Munna's brain. Something that spoke up as if important. Something that spoke in ugency, attempting to rouse her from her relaxed carelessness. She didn't want to, she really didn't want to, but she had to at least humor the small itch trying to worm itself into her thoughts. Maybe if she humored it, it would go away. And the sooner it went away was the soon she drifted off into the peaceful oblivion that came with sleep. So trying not to think of the delicious dreams rolling in her belly and the warm sunlight and the cool breeze and how they mixed so greatly together for the good conditions for a nap, she peeked out of one eye lazily. What greeted her sight? A fish. Not any fish, a bright orange fish that was flopping around comically. A flip flop here and a flutter flap there. All with a look of determination and intense concentration on its face as if it was actually trying to accomplish something. Something that the Munna was not seeing in the slightest. She merely rolled over to it, opening the other eye to get a better picture. This is what that nagging feeling came from? The Munna just let out a large yawn and rolled back over, drifting in the path she had been going in. She had so much better things to do, the fish could come back after her nap...and after he found a more impressive trick. He must have looked like a fool.
To Midna and Epona who stared at the helpless fish as though they wanted to put the poor thing out of it's misery. To any stranger who just happened to pass by, watching the epic battle between worthless fish and and achingly uncaring psycic-type that took the form of a Munna of all things. To that actual Munna who seemed to just want to take a nap more than anything and was probably mocking him within the depths of it's imagination. To himself, as stupid as it might have sounded because, honestly, he felt like a fool, so didn't that make it true? The only person who wouldn't feel the same was the Magikarp who was putting in it's best effort to actually hurt it's opponent.
But, even then, it must have thought it's trainer pretty idiotic for even thinking that putting it into battle was a good idea.
The Munna continued floating away, completely oblivious to his cries for it to pay attention and actually battle and the fish that was doing its very best to fight and opponent who was not there. Was it bad that part of him was glad that it was leaving, hovering away on the wind to do who knew what? No. Because that thing was going to beat the crud out of his fish, no doubt. Who cared that it was only level five and looked as though it wasn't even aware of the battle it was supposed to be fighting in? The moment it came to realize that he was actually challenging it, it would zap him with Psywave or something. Sadly, even when it did attack, he knew it would just be stall wars on his part, trying to keep his fish alive while it did absolutely nothing at all.
Oh, yes, that was right. He knew it's level and move set by sparing a glance at his Poke Dex. The device had it's uses, he'd admit, but, at times like these, it seemed to taunt him more than help him. You know, like how it told him his Pokemon was useless and wouldn't be able to do anything until it was evolved? And, even then, it didn't say when it would evolve... For all I know, it evolves at level fifty-five or something... I'm going to have to deal with this stupid fish for an eternity, I'm sure! Before he could whine in self pity, however, something else caught his attention from the corner of his eye.
Oh, no. Not something else.
It was still the Munna, looking down at the fish was two hazy eyes.
The pink colored creature let out a yawn, looking ridiculously tired as though all it wanted was a nap and nothing more. Seeing the display reminded the human of his own lack of sleep... A nap sounded nice. Yes, very nice... Wait a minute. That wasn't right. Even Carpe looked a little more sleepy than usual - Midna and Epona, too. Flashing out his Poke Dex for the third time within the span of fifteen minutes, he saw that one of the moves this Pokemon knew was, in fact, Yawn. Eyes flashing with anger, the green clothed man tried to get a good look at his new battling opponent, only to find it was... gone? sure enough, the psycic-type was rolling away. This only made his temper flare worse. "What, you big coward, going to put my Pokemon to sleep then just leave? Not if I have anything to say about it!"
He cast Midna and Epona a glance. The wolf-like creature was already on her paws, red eyes narrowing at the pink Pokemon and teeth bared. Again, the moment he gave the signal, she wouldn't waste any time putting that thing out of its misery. There was a fifteen level difference, of course, and a type advantage on her part. Though part of him really wanted to sick the dog on the Pocket Monster that was aggrivating him ever so, he thought better of it. "Pokemon gain levels just by being in battle, Garett... Already, Carpe Diem's getting stronger... This is completely and utterly worth it..." Looking back at his stronger team members, he commanded, "Down, girl! We're trying to train this fish, not slaughter the local Pokemon. I like your enthusiasm, though - try to keep it for your training sessions," he added when her face fell downcast. This instantly perked her up, causing her to sit down next to the horse Pokemon beside her.
"The only problem is we can't get it to take us seriously... It's going to leave and you're not going to gain any levels," he told the Magikarp, trying to calm himself down. Remembering the Poke Dex entry from before, he recalled that Magikarp could jump up to seven feet into the air. Did that limit it to only veritcal movements? Surely it could launch itself at an angle, successfully barreling itself into the enemy! The Munna was in such a daze, it wouldn't even have time to dodge, giving Carpe a clean hit if he aimed correctly. If it didn't hurt, well... It was always worth a shot, anyway. "Okay, Carpe, I've got an idea," he voiced aloud. "I want you to catapult yourself into that Munna, okay? Kinda like the move Tackle or Body Slam." It wouldn't be the same, of course. He doubted it would do any damage at all, in fact, being as weak a move as splash. But he needed to get the other Pokemon's attention and keep it, otherwise his training session would be ruin.
"On my signal!" Garett cried, waiting for the exact moment. As his cry rang out, the fish jumped - miraculously - at an angle, trying to throw himself sloppily into the Munna. "Go!"

WILD MUNNA APPEARED! Munna || female || Synchronize || Psychic || Lv 5 || Psywave || Defense Curl || Lucky Chant || Yawn Wild Pokemon's HP25/25Munna used Psywave!
The Munna had just wanted to go back to sleep, but now this dumb fish's attempts had succeeded in catching the Munna's attention, and she stopped floating away. It was a sad picture. Just sad. And pathetic. Maybe the least that the Munna thought it could do was to put the fish out of its misery. Better to end its suffering than to let the Magikarp keep at it until it started struggling.
Once more, the Magikarp flung itself up in the air, aiming its descent upon the Munna, but the pink blob or baby boar with no neck or whatever it was, didn't have to move much at all to avoid being face-slapped with a hard fish. Backing up a little, the Munna aimed its body down at the Magikarp, and used its Psywave attack, releasing a strange wave of psychic energy at the flopping fish.
Mod notes Psywave inflicts a random amount of damage, varying between 0.5× and 1.5× the user's level. The damage can be calculated using the following formula, where X is a randomly generated number between 0 and 10: (X + 5) × (User's level / 10) The damage is always rounded down; however, Psywave will always deal at least 1 HP of damage.
